Silica gel TLC profiles of culture filtrate pigments and the effect of Gln and Glu on pigment production. (A) PP-V production medium containing 1 to 15 mM L-glutamine. (B) PP-V production medium containing 1 to 15 mM L-glutamate. Pigments were extracted from cultures incubated for 120 hr with EtOAc and separated on silica gel TLC using developing solvents n-BuOH:AcOH:H2O (12:3:5). The violet pigment at Rf 0.75 was identified as PP-V. Smaller compound than Gln-V (Rf = 0.75) was observed. In our other researches, Smaller compound was considered Amino acid derivatives of Monascus pigment homologs (date not shown).
